On June 12, the remaining
Panther Schedule just evaporated, but just
nine days later, the girls from Greenwich
won the U12 Flight at the Hudson Valley
Classic. BOTN blogging found a tournament to
give them a chance to end the season on a
high note. The Panthers took it and never
looked back.
The day started badly though
with Campbell going down on the first
defensive play of the game but the girls
regrouped and held off the Cortlandt Venom 1
– 0. (Jackie P.) Next, the Wappinger’s
Fireballs fell 2 – 0 with goals from Annabel
S. & Brenna B. The third game started
immediately after game two, and the Panthers
just continued their march with a 4 – 0 win
over the Cornwall Dragons. (Naomi L.,
Jessica B., Brenna B. & Annabel S.) Three
wins put the Panthers at the top of the
flight, and set up a rematch with the
Cortlandt Venom. In the Championship Game,
the girls from Greenwich scored first with
their eighth unanswered goal of the day when
Brenna chased down a ball that the Cortlandt
defenders thought was going to make over the
end line. She found Alyssa B. in front of
the Cortlandt keeper who did not stand a
chance. It looked as if the Panthers were on
their way to another win when a quick run by
a Venom forward and a bad bounce saw the
ball wind up in the back of the Panther
goal. The Panthers did not flinch, and
quickly they found themselves back on top
off a beautiful cross to an unmarked Alyssa
B. whose second goal of the game proved to
be the winner. In the remaining minutes the
Panthers mounted an almost impenetrable wall
of defenders and held on to claim a 2-1
victory, and the championship
